Today we celebrate the finding of the true Cross, the Throne of God where His blood was spilled. It is on the cross where salvation is given to the world. As the Pharisees tried to hide Christ’s resurrection, they also wanted to hide the cross so that believers would not honor it. Mankind has always used its wisdom to hide the truth or make the lie seem like the truth while using humanly wisdom. However, when the time came, Queen Helena became a vessel by finding the cross and revealing its power. This was a huge celebration for Christians at that time and it’s still one of the biggest celebration within the Church. However, would the power of the cross have no effect on our lives because of how we live? Saint Paul sadly feared this in his epistle for the Corinthians.
“For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, unless the Cross of Christ should be made of none effect”1st Corinthians 1:17
When we approach Salvation in a worldly mentality
While the finding of the true cross is fortunate and the feeling is joyous when we celebrate the finding of the true cross, we also need to ask ourselves, “Does the Cross not have any effect in my day-to-day life?” and if so why? The answer to our question is address by Saint Paul when he said we are all approaching salvation/gospel with the worldly wisdom. We all want humanly explanation of what has been done for us on the cross and even God’s divine work in us. How a Virgin can be a mother? How can a divine became flesh? and How does a divine God coming down to earth and dying on the cross for mankind make sense?
St. Paul said, “Preaching about the cross sounds foolish to those who are dying in sin (the world). But it is the power of God to those of us who are being saved from the punishment of sin.” (1st Corinthians 1:17)
When we think of the foolish ones we always think of the unbelievers but it’s unfortunate that sometimes we, who say we rely on the cross are foolish when we think of the Celebration of the Cross just in a traditional sense. We can’t see the manifestation of the true power of the cross if we are living with the worldly mentality of having fun. If we want to see the effect of the Cross on our day-to-day lives, we need to approach God’s mysterious work it in faith as little Children and follow His commandments.
When we talk about the Cross but don’t walk carrying the Cross.
Secondly when we speak of each other with eloquent, powerful and scholarly words about spirituality but don’t want to carry our cross and follow the path of Christ. When we preach about prayer but don’t pray, prayer will just become wisdom. If we say that we rely on the Cross but don’t want to forgive others, we’re just talkers. Let’s not talk about the cross, but rather, let’s take up and carry our cross. Carrying up the cross is tiring and uncomfortable for the flesh but that is when we will see the effect of the Cross on our day-to-day lives. Therefore, we need to find the hidden cross within ourselves due to self-comfort, empty knowledge, and doubtful heart and shine it to the world through good works not just by our words.
